about Finspired

My name is Baier Rakowski, and this year I was lucky enough to be accepted to medical school at Western University of Health Sciences' College of Osteopathic Medicine. Finspired actually started January 13th, 2010. It was a first step for me to start thinking of ways that I could be a catalyst for change. However, after an initial flurry of activity following the earthquake in Haiti, it faded into obscurity. Initially it stood for "Friends Inspired," a name I came up with thinking about how extraordinary the people in my life are, and the inspiration I draw from their influence. I thought up a logo including a dolphin, because the metaphor of pods of dolphins working together to achieve astonishing things seemed so relevant.

If you haven't watched "The Cove," you should. It is a powerful documentary about a small cove in Japan where thousands of dolphins deemed unfit for aquariums are slaughtered every year. Right in the middle of the film, one of the film's directors, Louie Psihoyos, dropped the line that sits atop the Finspired homepage, "You're either an activist, or an inactivist."

Life is about making a difference. For those who can support Finspired and my efforts, you have my deepest gratitude. For those who cannot, your encouragement is worth more than you'll ever realize. May the journey be as exciting for you as I know it will be for me.
